Bienville Square: Mobile's Downtown Oasis

Bienville Square, located in the heart of downtown Mobile, Alabama, has been a vital part of the city's history and community life for nearly two centuries. Established in 1824 and named after Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne, Sieur de Bienville, the founder of Mobile, this historic city park occupies an entire block bordered by Dauphin, Saint Joseph, Saint Francis, and North Conception streets. Originally designated as a public park by the United States Congress, Bienville Square has served as a focal point for residents and visitors alike. The square's lush landscaping features towering oak trees, vibrant flower beds, and well-maintained pathways, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere. The centerpiece of the square is a magnificent cast-iron fountain, erected in 1890 to honor Dr. George Ketchum, who brought potable water to Mobile. Throughout its history, Bienville Square has been a site for significant events. In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt delivered a speech in the square, emphasizing the importance of the Panama Canal to the Port of Mobile. During World War II, it served as a gathering place for shipyard workers. The square has also been a site for civil rights demonstrations and other important civic events. Today, Bienville Square hosts a variety of events, including the Market in the Park, festivals, and holiday celebrations.
