Discover more about Mobile Carnival Museum

Step into a world of dazzling colors and intricate designs at the Mobile Carnival Museum, a vibrant testament to the city's rich Mardi Gras heritage. Located in the heart of downtown Mobile, within the historic Bernstein-Bush mansion, the museum offers a captivating journey into Carnival, showcasing extravagant costumes, elaborate floats, and the fascinating history of this beloved Southern tradition. Mobile's Mardi Gras predates the New Orleans celebration by nearly two decades. The museum, which opened in 2005, is the result of a volunteer effort by local Mobilians who wanted to share the city's unique Carnival history. Inside, visitors can explore 14 gallery rooms filled with costumes, crowns, scepters, and historical artifacts. Exhibits tell the story of Carnival's evolution, from its early origins to the grand spectacle it is today. The Queen's Gallery is a highlight, displaying gowns, trains, and jewels worn by Carnival queens throughout the years. The museum also features costumes of jesters from parading societies. Interactive exhibits, including one that allows visitors to "ride" a Carnival float and throw doubloons, provide a behind-the-mask view of the street party. The boutique gift shop, operated by Toomey's Mardi Gras, offers specialty gift items, souvenirs, and parade throws. The museum also hosts rotating exhibits. One recent exhibit, “Carnival and War: Mardi Gras during times of Armed Conflict,” explores how military struggles have shaped Mobile's Carnival celebrations.
