Lake Frank Jackson: A Fisherman's Paradise in Opp, Alabama

Lake Frank Jackson, the centerpiece of Frank Jackson State Park, is a 1,000-acre impoundment on Lightwood Knot Creek near Opp, Alabama. The lake and surrounding park offer a diverse range of outdoor activities, with fishing being the main draw. The lake is renowned for its excellent freshwater fishing, stocked and managed by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Anglers can find largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, shellcracker, and catfish in abundance. Fishing tournaments are frequently held here, attracting anglers from across the region. Boat launch ramps provide easy access for boaters, while a grassy beach caters to swimmers and paddlers. An ADA-accessible fishing platform is located at the northwest end of the dam, ensuring access for all. Beyond fishing, the park features picnic areas, lakefront RV camping with cable TV hookups, a modern bathhouse, and over three miles of walking trails. A boardwalk leads to an island in the lake, offering scenic views and wildlife viewing opportunities. The park also hosts the annual "Scarecrows in the Park" event during October and November, where the walking trails are decorated with scarecrows created by local businesses and organizations. Frank Jackson State Park opened as Lightwood Knot Creek State Park in 1970 and was later renamed in honor of longtime Covington County legislator Frank Jackson in the 1980s, recognizing his efforts in bringing the lake and park to fruition. The park has a rich history, with evidence of Native American settlements predating European arrival. Today, it serves as a cherished recreational area and a haven for wildlife, offering a peaceful escape into nature.
