Getting There

  • Driving

    From Fort Payne, head northeast on AL-35 N, then continue onto Desoto Parkway NE following signs for DeSoto State Park. The park entrance is about 8 miles from Fort Payne. Once inside, follow signs to the Talmadge Butler Boardwalk Trailhead. Indian Falls is across the road from the trailhead. Parking is available near the Talmadge Butler Boardwalk Trailhead and at the main picnic area. A day-use parking fee of $4 per vehicle is applicable in certain areas of the park.

  • Walking

    If you are already within DeSoto State Park, walk towards the Country Store & Information Center. From there, follow the signs for the Talmadge Butler Boardwalk Trail. Indian Falls is a short walk across Desoto Parkway from the trailhead. Exercise caution when crossing the road. There are no additional costs for walking within the park beyond the initial park entrance fee, if applicable.

Situated atop Lookout Mountain, the park spans 3,502 acres, featuring forests, rivers, and diverse landscapes. While not the largest waterfall in the park, Indian Falls has a unique charm, cascading approximately 20 feet into a sheltered ravine.The waterfall's flow depends on rainfall, with the most impressive displays occurring during wetter months. A well-maintained footpath from the Talmadge Butler Boardwalk Trailhead provides easy access, making it suitable for all ages and abilities. A wooden footbridge spans the top of the cascade, offering a safe viewing platform. Trails lead to different perspectives, and adventurous visitors can explore a small cove behind the falls.DeSoto State Park has over 35 miles of hiking trails, ranging from easy boardwalks to challenging climbs. The park was developed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), who built trails, cabins, and other facilities. Today, visitors can explore the CCC Museum to learn more about the park's history.
