Point Park: A Civil War Memorial Above the Clouds

Point Park, a 16-acre memorial park, crowns Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, offering visitors a unique blend of natural beauty and Civil War history. Established in 1905, the park commemorates the Battle of Lookout Mountain, a crucial engagement in the Chattanooga Campaign of 1863. Here, Union forces, under General Joseph Hooker, successfully attacked Confederate positions, securing a vital foothold in the region. The battle is often referred to as 'The Battle Above the Clouds' due to the thick fog that shrouded the mountain during the fighting.Today, Point Park features a network of paved walking paths that wind past historic tablets, monuments, and Confederate artillery positions. The New York Peace Memorial, erected by the State of New York, stands as a tribute to the reconciliation between Union and Confederate veterans after the war. The Ochs Memorial Museum and Observatory, located at the mountain's point, offers panoramic views of Chattanooga and the Tennessee River, 1,300 feet below. Inside, exhibits detail the Civil War and the area's history.Visitors can explore the park's overlooks, including the Ochs Overlook, for breathtaking vistas. The Lookout Mountain Battlefield Visitor Center, located across the street from the park's entrance, houses exhibits on the Civil War campaign for Chattanooga, including James Walker's 30-foot-long painting, 'The Battle of Lookout Mountain'. Point Park also provides access to hiking trails, such as the Bluff Trail, which leads to Sunset Rock and other scenic points on Lookout Mountain.
