Discover more about Alabama Aquarium at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab

The Alabama Aquarium at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, formerly known as the Estuarium, offers an immersive journey into the aquatic ecosystems of coastal Alabama. As the public outreach facility for the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL), Alabama's primary marine education and research center, the aquarium showcases the unique habitats of the region. Visitors can explore four key habitats: the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta, Mobile Bay, the Barrier Islands, and the Northern Gulf of Mexico. Each exhibit teems with native flora and fauna, from alligators and turtles in the delta exhibit to colorful fish, sharks, and rays in the Gulf of Mexico exhibit. Interactive exhibits, including a touch tank with rays, provide hands-on learning experiences for all ages. The Dauphin Island Sea Lab itself has a rich history, dating back to 1971 when it was established by the Alabama State Legislature as a marine science education and research center. The Estuarium opened to the public in 1998 and was renovated in the summer of 2023. Today, the Alabama Aquarium continues to educate and inspire visitors with its focus on local ecosystems and current Sea Lab research.
