Bragg-Mitchell Mansion: A Glimpse into Mobile's Antebellum Past

The Bragg-Mitchell Mansion, an architectural icon of Mobile, Alabama, offers a rare glimpse into life in the Old South. Built in 1855 by Judge John Bragg, this 13,000-square-foot Greek Revival mansion was designed to be the center of Mobile's lively social season. Throughout its history, the Bragg-Mitchell Mansion has been owned by several prominent families. The Bragg family enjoyed the home until 1880, followed by the Pratts, Uphams, Davis', and Wingates. In 1924, A.S. Mitchell purchased the home, and it was his family who donated the mansion to the Explore Center in the late 1970s. Recognizing the mansion's historical significance, the Explore Center built a separate science museum and began restoring the Bragg-Mitchell Mansion to its former glory. Today, the Bragg-Mitchell Mansion operates as a historic house museum and event center. Visitors can take guided tours to learn about the mansion's history, architecture, and the families who lived there. The meticulously landscaped grounds feature centuries-old oak trees draped with Spanish moss and vibrant azaleas, creating a serene and picturesque setting.
