Discover more about Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception

The Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, located in the heart of Mobile, Alabama, is a testament to the city's rich history and the enduring faith of its Catholic community. Consecrated in 1850, the cathedral stands as a majestic example of Roman basilica architecture, replacing earlier structures that fell victim to fire. Originally established as a parish in the early 18th century, the church received its present title, "Church of the Immaculate Conception," in 1781 during Mobile's Spanish period. In 1829, Bishop Michael Portier, the first Bishop of Mobile, embarked on a mission to construct a cathedral worthy of its name. The cornerstone was laid in 1835, and after years of dedicated effort, the cathedral was consecrated on a cold December day in 1850. Bishop Martin John Spalding of Louisville remarked that the edifice was "almost worthy of God". Subsequent generations collaborated to complete the church, adapting to circumstances such as the fire of 1954, which could have destroyed the entire structure. The classic portico and cast-iron fence were added after the Civil War, while the towers and steeples were completed under Bishop Jeremiah O'Sullivan. The magnificent stained-glass windows, crafted by the internationally acclaimed studios of Franz Mayer in Munich, were installed under Bishop Edward P. Allen. In 2012, Pope Benedict XVI designated the Cathedral as a minor basilica, underscoring its significance within the Catholic Church. Today, the Cathedral-Basilica continues to be an active place of worship and a cherished landmark in Mobile. Its doors are open to people of all faiths who seek to admire its architectural splendor and experience its peaceful ambiance. Visitors can attend mass, take guided tours, or simply spend time in quiet contemplation, soaking in the beauty and history of this remarkable landmark.
