Discover more about Davis Theatre for the Performing Arts

The Davis Theatre for the Performing Arts, located in the heart of downtown Montgomery, Alabama, stands as a beacon of arts and culture. This meticulously restored theater offers a diverse program of live entertainment, captivating audiences of all ages. Originally opened on January 25, 1930, as The Paramount Theatre, it was designed as a movie palace showcasing the latest "talkies" and vaudeville shows. The Paramount became a beloved destination for moviegoers; many couples had first dates and engagements within its walls. The Paramount screened films for 45 years, with "Gone With the Wind" being the last movie shown before its closure in 1976. Troy University purchased the theater and undertook a comprehensive restoration project, reopening it on May 21, 1983, as the Davis Theatre for the Performing Arts, named in honor of Tine W. Davis. The restoration included reproducing the original plaster ornamentation and restoring the ornate chandeliers. The theater boasts excellent acoustics, a 1,200-seat capacity, and a full-sized orchestra pit. Today, the Davis Theatre hosts amateur and professional musicals, dramatic productions, chamber music groups, symphony orchestras, dance groups, and ballets.
