Chickasaw State Park: A Natural Retreat

Chickasaw State Park, located along the border of Chester and Hardeman Counties in Tennessee, spans 1,400 acres within a 14,384-acre state forest. Named after the Chickasaw tribe who once inhabited the area, the park was established as one of Tennessee's New Deal-era state parks. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and the Works Progress Administration (WPA) played a significant role in developing the park's infrastructure, including Sagamore Lodge and several vacation cabins, some of which are still rented out today.The park's diverse terrain includes some of the highest points in West Tennessee, offering varied ecosystems to explore. Visitors can enjoy a range of activities such as hiking on over four miles of trails, fishing, boating on Lake Placid and Lake LaJoie, and horseback riding. The park also features camping facilities, including RV, tent, and wrangler campsites, as well as cabin rentals for overnight stays.Bird watching is popular, with opportunities to spot various species along the Black Belt Birding Trail. The park's trails cater to different skill levels, from easy strolls around Lake Placid to moderate hikes through upland forests.
