Originally constructed in 1884 by Eli Sims Shorter II and his wife, Wileyna Lamar Shorter, the mansion quickly became a symbol of their prominent status in the community. Tragedy struck in 1895 when a fire destroyed the original structure, but the Shorters embarked on an ambitious rebuilding project, resulting in the magnificent Classical Revival mansion that stands today. The mansion is a stunning example of Greek Revival architecture, characterized by its grand columns, symmetrical facade, and intricate detailing. Significant interior and exterior renovations in 1906, led by architect Jack McLeod, resulted in the mansion's present-day appearance. Inside, visitors can explore spacious rooms adorned with period furnishings, exquisite artwork, and ornate decorations, offering a glimpse into the lives of the Shorter family and the social customs of the time.The Shorter family played a significant role in Eufaula's history. Eli Sims Shorter II was a successful businessman and civic leader, while Wileyna Lamar Shorter was a prominent socialite. The mansion served as a gathering place for the town's elite, hosting lavish parties, elegant dinners, and important social events. After Eli Sims Shorter's death in 1908, Wileyna Lamar Shorter continued to reside in the mansion until 1927. The mansion was then passed down to their daughter, Fannie Shorter Upshaw, and later to her daughter, Wileyna S. Kennedy.In 1965, the Kennedy family sold the mansion to the Eufaula Heritage Association, a newly formed organization dedicated to preserving Eufaula's historic treasures. The Eufaula Heritage Association transformed the Shorter Mansion into a house museum, showcasing the mansion's history and architectural significance. The association also organized the city's first pilgrimage in 1966, an annual event that celebrates Eufaula's historic homes and gardens.
