The back portion of the house was initially constructed around 1826 by John Boardman, a newspaper editor. Later, the house became associated with Samuel Moore, who was known for his prize-winning Jersey cow, Lily Flagg.The house is an example of Italianate architecture. In 1892, Moore took Lily Flagg to the World's Fair in Chicago, where she was judged the world's leading butter-fat producer. Upon their return, Moore celebrated Lily Flagg's accomplishments with a grand party at the house, painting it butter-fat yellow for the occasion and inviting around 1,500 guests. The legacy of Lily Flagg continues in Huntsville, with a street and a swim club named in her honor.The Twickenham Historic District, where the Moore-Rhett House is located, features a variety of architectural styles, reflecting the history of the people who built the city. The district has over 65 pre-Civil War homes.
