Lowe Mansion: A Glimpse into Huntsville's Past

The Lowe Mansion, situated at 413 McClung Ave SE in Huntsville, Alabama, stands as a captivating landmark embodying the city's historical and architectural significance. Located within the Twickenham Historic District, the mansion provides a window into the lives of families who played pivotal roles in shaping Huntsville's social and political landscape.Constructed between 1901 and 1902 by A.S. and Mattie Lowe Fletcher, the Lowe Mansion replaced a house dating back to 1817. A.S. Fletcher, a prominent figure in Alabama politics, served as a delegate to the 1901 Constitutional Convention and as a representative in the Alabama State House. He commissioned the Chateauesque-style home to reflect his esteemed position and to create a residence exuding elegance.The mansion's design was entrusted to Herbert Cowell, an architect from Joliet, Illinois, who also designed the nearby Van Valkenburgh-Johnston House. Cowell's expertise in the Chateauesque Revival style is evident in the Lowe Mansion's steeply pitched roofs, elaborate dormers, and ornate detailing, reminiscent of French Renaissance chateaus. The stone facing was meticulously shaped and numbered in New York before being shipped to Huntsville, highlighting the attention to detail.Following the Fletchers, the Lowe Mansion became the residence of Robert Joseph Lowe and his wife, Jane Knight Lowe. Robert Lowe, a nephew of the Fletchers, continued the family's tradition of public service in the Alabama legislature. Jane Knight Lowe resided in the home for approximately 50 years and managed the Lowe Hereford Farm after her husband's death in 1951, becoming a respected figure in Huntsville's civic and philanthropic circles.Upon her death in 1997, Jane Knight Lowe bequeathed the Lowe Mansion to The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) Foundation, along with a significant donation for its renovation. The Foundation transformed the mansion into the official residence of the UAH President and a venue for university and community events, ensuring its preservation and continued role as a welcoming space.
