Discover more about Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge

Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, whose name translates to “safe harbor” in French, is a vital sanctuary protecting some of Alabama's last remaining undisturbed coastal habitats. Established in 1980, the refuge spans approximately 7,000 acres across five separate units in Baldwin and Mobile Counties. It serves as a crucial resting and feeding area for migratory birds during the spring and fall, and provides a protected habitat for threatened and endangered species such as the Alabama beach mouse and nesting sea turtles. The refuge encompasses a diverse range of coastal ecosystems, from constantly changing beach dunes to rolling pine-oak woodlands. Visitors can explore four designated hiking trails that wind through these varied habitats. The Jeff Friend Trail is a popular, wheelchair-accessible one-mile loop through maritime forest and along Little Lagoon, offering excellent birdwatching opportunities. The Pine Beach Trail, a more strenuous two-mile hike, traverses an intact dune ecosystem. The Centennial Trail connects the Jeff Friend and Pine Beach Trails, providing a moderate two-mile trek through maritime forest, swamp, and dune swales. The Gator Lake Trail offers a one-mile hike along a dune ridge. Bon Secour is a haven for more than 360 species of birds, making it a world-class birding destination, especially during migration seasons. The refuge also provides critical habitat for the endangered Alabama beach mouse and nesting sea turtles, including loggerhead, green, and Kemp's ridley sea turtles. Visitors can also enjoy fishing, kayaking, and other water activities in designated areas. The Visitor Center offers helpful information, maps, and brochures to enhance your visit.
