Discover more about Magnolia Grove

Magnolia Grove, located in Greensboro, Alabama, is a classic example of Greek Revival architecture, constructed around 1840. Built by Colonel Isaac Croom as a town house, not a plantation house, it stands on what was once a 20-acre parcel. The house is known for its stateliness and simplicity, set amidst a grove of large magnolia trees. The mansion is a two-story structure made of handmade brick, with the facade plastered and painted white. Six Doric columns support the unadorned pediment, showcasing its Greek Revival style. The rear of the house features a two-story veranda with fluted iron columns. Inside, a wide central hall divides the interior. The house is filled with original family furnishings and portraits of the Croom and Hobson families. Magnolia Grove was the boyhood home of Richmond Pearson Hobson, a Spanish-American War hero and U.S. Congressman. Hobson gained national recognition for his attempt to block Santiago Harbor during the war. Later in life, he became a staunch supporter of Prohibition. The Hobson family deeded Magnolia Grove to the state of Alabama in 1943 as a memorial. Today, Magnolia Grove serves as a historic house museum operated by the Alabama Historical Commission. Visitors can explore the main house, a detached kitchen, and a slave house with interpretive exhibits. The grounds also feature a boxwood garden. Magnolia Grove offers a rich experience, blending architectural beauty with historical depth.
