Discover more about Doster Road Artesian Well House

The Doster Road Artesian Well House is a cherished landmark in Prattville, Alabama, a city known as "The Fountain City" for its numerous artesian wells. For generations, locals and visitors alike have flocked to this site to partake in the naturally flowing, cool, and refreshing artesian water. The well house itself was erected in 2001 through a partnership between the Historic Prattville Redevelopment Authority and the City of Prattville. The structure provides a sheltered space with benches, inviting visitors to relax and enjoy the serene atmosphere. The surrounding area features lush greenery, offering a tranquil escape and photo opportunities. Prattville's history is deeply intertwined with its artesian wells. Daniel Pratt, the city's founder, recognized the importance of these natural springs and incorporated them into his industrial operations. The wells provided a reliable water source for his cotton gin mill and other manufacturing plants, contributing to the city's early economic success. In 1933, the Prattville Progress documented over 400 artesian wells in Prattville and its immediate surroundings; some even supplied the town's water system. While many have been capped or ceased to flow, several public wells remain, including those in the Daniel Pratt Historic District.
