Getting There

Walking

If you are near the Riverwalk or downtown Montgomery, you can walk to Wright Brothers Park. Head east along the Riverwalk Greenway Trail until you reach the stairs leading up to the park. Alternatively, walk north along Molton Street, then turn left onto Maxwell Boulevard. Continue walking until you reach the park entrance on your left. Note that the walk from downtown is approximately 1.5 - 2 miles.

Wright Brothers Park, located on Maxwell Boulevard in Montgomery, Alabama, provides beautiful views of the Alabama River and honors the pioneering spirit of Wilbur and Orville Wright. The park, previously named Overlook Park, was renamed on July 2, 2013, after undergoing renovations, to dedicate it to the Wright Brothers.In 1910, just seven years after their historic flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, the Wright brothers established the nation's first civilian flying school on what was then a cotton plantation on the outskirts of Montgomery. The city's favorable climate and flat farmland made it an ideal location for their endeavor. The Commercial Club of Montgomery supported the project by constructing a hangar and improving the flying field. Although the Wright Brothers Flying School operated for only a few months, it holds a special place in aviation history. During this time, Orville Wright personally oversaw the training of several students, including Walter Brookins, who made history with the first night flight in Montgomery.The park features amenities for visitors to enjoy, including picnic shelters, benches, and walking trails. A full-scale replica of the Wright Flyer, installed in June 2013, serves as a visual reminder of the Wright brothers' contribution to aviation and their connection to Montgomery.
