Ellen Axson Wilson Statue: A Tribute to Rome's First Lady

The Ellen Axson Wilson Statue stands proudly at 2 Government Plaza in Rome, Georgia, a tribute to a remarkable woman who left an indelible mark on both the city and the nation. Ellen Louise Axson Wilson (1860-1914) was the first wife of President Woodrow Wilson and served as First Lady of the United States from 1913 until her death. Born in Savannah, Georgia, she spent much of her childhood and young adulthood in Rome, where her father was the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. The statue, created by Arizona artist Stephanie Hunter and sponsored by the Rome Area Council for the Arts, captures Ellen's passion for art. It portrays her standing at an easel, brush in hand, painting a scene overlooking the Oostanaula River, reflecting her deep appreciation for the arts and the beauty of her surroundings. Ellen was an accomplished American Impressionist artist. She also designed the White House Rose Garden.Beyond her artistic pursuits, Ellen Wilson was known for her dedication to social causes. As First Lady, she advocated for urban renewal and improved living conditions for Washington's disadvantaged citizens, setting an example for future First Ladies. She is buried in Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Rome, Georgia, making her the only First Lady buried in the state.
