Discover more about Capitol Park

Capitol Park, situated on a bluff overlooking the Black Warrior River in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, offers a unique window into the state's early history. From 1826 to 1846, Tuscaloosa served as Alabama's capital, and this park was the site of the Alabama State Capitol building. Designed by English architect William Nichols, the capitol building hosted the state legislature until the capital moved to Montgomery. After the capital relocated, the building transitioned into the Alabama Central Female College. Unfortunately, the building was destroyed by a fire in 1923. For many years, the ruins were dispersed, but in 1988, a design committee initiated historical and archaeological research to create a preserved ruin. Today, visitors can see the stone foundation and two columns that remain as a visible reminder of the old capitol. Capitol Park provides a green space in downtown Tuscaloosa, hosting occasional cultural events, live music, and family entertainment. The park also offers a peaceful escape, inviting visitors to picnic amidst the historical ruins. The Old Tavern Museum, located on the park's eastern side, provides additional insights into Tuscaloosa's past.
