The Samuel Ullman Museum, nestled in the historic Five Points South neighborhood of Birmingham, Alabama, is dedicated to preserving and promoting the life, work, and ideals of Samuel Ullman (1840-1924). A German immigrant, Ullman significantly impacted Birmingham as a businessman, religious leader, advocate for education, and poet. The museum is located in Ullman's former residence, providing an intimate setting for visitors to connect with his story. Born in Hechingen, Germany, Ullman immigrated to the United States with his family in 1851 to escape discrimination. He settled in Mississippi, where he became a businessman and community leader. In 1884, Ullman moved to Birmingham, a burgeoning industrial city, and quickly became involved in civic affairs. He served on the city's first Board of Education, advocating for equal educational opportunities for all children, including African Americans. Ullman also served as the lay rabbi of Temple Emanu-El, a Reform Jewish congregation, where he championed progressive causes. In his later years, Ullman turned his attention to writing. His poems and essays reflected his deep-seated values and his optimistic outlook on life. At the age of 78, Ullman penned his most famous work, "Youth". The poem gained international recognition when it became a favorite of General Douglas MacArthur, who kept a framed copy in his Tokyo office during the post-World War II occupation of Japan and often quoted from it in his speeches. The museum officially opened in 1994 and is operated by the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).
