Discover more about Tirana Castle

Tirana Castle, or Kalaja e Tiranës, is a significant historical site located in the center of Albania's capital city. The castle's history stretches back to before 1300, with remnants from the Byzantine era. It is also known as the Fortress of Justinian, suggesting a possible founding or reconstruction during the 6th century. The castle was strategically positioned where the main east-west and north-south roads crossed, forming the heart of Tirana.During the Ottoman period, the castle underwent further construction in the late 18th century by Ahmet Pasha Bargjini. In 1798, the Toptani family from Kruja took possession of the castle. In 1832, the castle was demolished by order of the Ottoman Grand Vizier Reşid Mehmed Pasha. Today, only a few remnants of the original fortress remain, including a 6-meter-high Ottoman-era wall.In December 2018, the castle was opened to visitors as a collaboration between the Toptani family and the Municipality of Tirana. The site has been transformed into a vibrant hub, featuring a traditional bazaar with handcraft stores, restaurants, hotels and cultural institutions. The uncovered wall foundations have been incorporated into the pedestrianized Murat Toptani Street, blending the old with the new.
