Petrelë Castle: A Sentinel of Albanian History

Petrelë Castle, known locally as Kalaja e Petrelës, stands as a testament to Albania's rich and storied past. Located in the village of Petrelë, south of Tirana, this historic castle's origins trace back to the 6th century AD when it was erected under the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. The castle rises 329 meters (1,079 feet) above sea level.Though initially constructed in ancient times, the present structure largely dates to the 15th century. Petrelë Castle was strategically integrated into the defense and signaling network of Krujë Castle, communicating with each other via fires. During Skanderbeg's مقاومة against the Ottomans, the castle was commanded by his sister, Mamica Kastrioti.The castle boasts a triangular shape, complete with two observation towers. From its elevated position, visitors can enjoy views of the Erzen valley, rolling hills, olive groves, and distant mountains.
