Discover more about Apollonia Archaeological Park

Apollonia Archaeological Park, located 12 km west of Fier, Albania, offers a captivating glimpse into the past. Founded in 588 BC by Greek colonists from Corfu and Corinth, Apollonia thrived as a major city in the ancient world, named after the god Apollo. Its strategic location along the Adriatic coast and the Via Egnatia, a key Roman road, contributed to its growth as a cultural and commercial center. At its peak, Apollonia was home to around 60,000 residents and attracted philosophers, artists, and even Roman emperors. Octavian Augustus, the first Roman emperor, studied here before rising to power. The city began to decline in the 3rd century AD due to harbor silting from an earthquake and was eventually abandoned.Today, visitors can explore the extensive archaeological site, which includes the remains of temples, an Odeon, a library, and the Bouleuterion (council house). The Archaeological Museum, housed in the 13th-century Monastery of St. Mary, displays a collection of artifacts unearthed during excavations. The park's elevated position provides panoramic views of the surrounding Adriatic plain.Key highlights include the Bouleuterion, the Odeon, the Temple of Artemis, the Monument of Agonothetes, and the Byzantine Monastery and Church. The Nymphaeum, with its Doric columns, is one of the best-preserved structures. Walking through the ruins offers a unique opportunity to experience Albania's rich history and imagine life in this ancient city.
