Discover more about Venetian Castle

The Venetian Castle, located within Butrint National Park, offers a captivating glimpse into the region's diverse past. Built by the Venetians in the 14th and 15th centuries on the site of the ancient acropolis, the castle served as a strategic stronghold. Its location provided control over the Vivari Channel, a vital waterway connecting Lake Butrint to the Ionian Sea. Over the centuries, the castle witnessed numerous shifts in power, reflecting Butrint's complex history. The castle was seized by the Ottomans at times, before being recaptured by the Venetians. In 1572, the acropolis of Butrint was abandoned, leading to the construction of the Venetian Triangular Castle. In 1936, the castle was restored by Luigi Maria Ugolini and now houses the Archaeological Museum of Butrint. Today, visitors can explore the castle's ruins, climb its tower for stunning views of Butrint National Park, Lake Butrint, and the Vivari Channel, and explore the museum. The museum displays a collection of artifacts discovered during excavations, providing insights into Butrint's development from ancient Greek and Roman settlements to its Byzantine and Venetian periods.
