Discover more about Petrelë

Petrelë Castle, known locally as Kalaja e Petrelës, is strategically positioned in the village of Petrelë, approximately 15 kilometers south of Tirana. The castle's history stretches back to Late Antiquity, with foundations believed to have been laid in the 3rd or 4th century AD. It was later rebuilt in the 6th century during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. The castle is thought to be first mentioned as Petrula by Anna Komnene, a Byzantine princess-historian, in her book 'The Alexiad'.The present-day structure largely dates back to the 15th century. In 1445, Karl Muzaka Thopia, the lord of Petrelë, married Mamica Kastrioti, sister of the Albanian national hero Skanderbeg. During Skanderbeg's battles against the Ottomans, Mamica Kastrioti commanded the castle. The castle's triangular shape and two observation towers provided wide views of the surrounding hills, plains, and the Erzen valley, enabling communication with the castles of Krujë and Durrës via fires.Today, Petrelë Castle stands as a popular tourist destination, offering not only a journey into Albania's history but also stunning views of the surrounding landscape. A restaurant located within the castle walls allows visitors to enjoy traditional Albanian cuisine while immersing themselves in the historical ambiance. The castle is open to visitors every day and is easily accessible from Tirana.
