Mesi Bridge Travel Guide

Nestled in the village of Mes, the Mesi Bridge stands as a testament to 18th-century Ottoman engineering. Constructed around 1770 by Kara Mahmud Bushati, the local Ottoman pasha, the bridge spans the Kir River. It was strategically built to connect Shkodër with Drisht and other northern settlements, facilitating trade and movement across the Kir Valley towards Pristina.The bridge is 108 meters long, 3.4 meters wide, and 12.5 meters high, featuring 13 arches of varying sizes. Constructed in two phases, the initial phase included the central arch and one adjacent arch, with the remaining eleven added later. The bridge's design showcases traditional Ottoman architectural elements, using locally sourced stone materials.Today, the Mesi Bridge is a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors with its historical significance and scenic surroundings. The Albanian Development Fund has invested in improving access to the bridge, allowing tourists to experience its architectural features closely. Visitors can walk along the bridge, explore the riverbanks, and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere.
