Gorica Bridge: A Timeless Ottoman Landmark

The Gorica Bridge, also known as Ura e Goricës or Kurt Ahmed Pasha bridge, stands as a proud landmark in the heart of Berat, Albania. This elegant Ottoman bridge, with its seven arches, has connected the Gorica neighborhood to the rest of the city for centuries.Originally constructed from wood in 1780 during the reign of Ahmet Kurt Pasha, the bridge was rebuilt with stone in the 1920s to increase its stability. Measuring 129 meters long and 5.3 meters wide, it rises approximately 10 meters above the Osum River. The arches, varying in span from 9 to 16.7 meters, give the bridge its distinctive and elegant appearance.Local legend tells of a dark tradition associated with the original wooden bridge: a young girl was said to have been imprisoned and starved within a dungeon in the bridge's foundation as a sacrifice to appease the spirits and ensure the bridge's safety. During a restoration, a sculpture representing a woman's head on a pylon was discovered, adding a mystical layer to the legend.Today, the Gorica Bridge is more than just a crossing; it's a symbol of Berat and a testament to the city's architectural heritage.
