Checkpoint, also known as Postbllok, stands as a stark reminder of Albania's communist past. Located on Bulevardi Dëshmorët e Kombit in Tirana, opposite the government building, this memorial commemorates the political prisoners who suffered under the Hoxha regime. It serves as a tribute to the country's journey toward modernization and a testament to the resilience of the Albanian people. The memorial, co-created by writer and former dissident Fatos Lubonja and artist Ardian Isufi, comprises three main elements : a small concrete defensive bunker, one of the hundreds of thousands that were built during the communist era; concrete supports from the notorious Spaç labor camp, where thousands of political prisoners were forced to work; and a brightly painted section of the Berlin Wall from Postdamer Platz. These elements combine to represent the pervasive fear, militarization, suffering, and isolation that characterized Albania under communist rule.Visiting Checkpoint offers an opportunity to reflect on Albania's dark past and honor the resilience of its people. It's a place where the stark contrasts between the old and the new are evident, as contemporary architecture juxtaposes with remnants of the past. The surrounding area is a vibrant hub for cultural exchange, filled with cafes and shops where visitors can enjoy traditional Albanian delicacies and purchase unique souvenirs.
