Kanina Castle, or Kalaja e Kaninës, stands as a majestic ruin overlooking the Bay of Vlora, approximately 6 kilometers southeast of the city center. This ancient fortress boasts a rich history, with origins tracing back to the 3rd century BC when it served as a secured settlement for the Amantes, an Illyrian tribal community. Its strategic location on the side of Shushicë Mountain, about 380 meters above sea level, provided a natural vantage point for defense and surveillance.Over the centuries, Kanina Castle has been a focal point of various empires and civilizations, including the Byzantines, Angevins, and Ottomans. Emperor Justinian I reconstructed the castle in the 6th century AD as part of a broader effort to fortify the Balkan region. The castle served as the center of the Principality of Valona in the 14th century.
