Tirana Castle, or Kalaja e Tiranës, is a significant historical site located in the center of Tirana. Its history stretches back to before 1300, with remnants from the Byzantine era. The castle's location marks the point where the main east-west and north-south roads once crossed, forming the nucleus of the city. Believed to have been one of the fortifications constructed or reconstructed by Emperor Justinian in the 6th century, the castle has undergone numerous transformations over the centuries. In the late 18th century, Ahmet Pasha Bargjini constructed new walls on the ruins of the old castle during the Ottoman period. Later, the Toptani family from Kruja gained ownership in 1798 and recently restored the castle into a tourist attraction. Today, visitors can explore the remains of the Ottoman-era walls, which stand approximately 6 meters high. The area inside the castle walls has been revitalized with restaurants, hotels, cultural institutions, and a traditional bazaar. The pedestrianized Murat Toptani Street incorporates the uncovered wall foundations, offering a blend of historical ambiance and modern amenities. The castle is not only a historical site but also a place where modern and traditional elements meet, providing a unique experience for tourists and locals alike. Inside the castle, you can find a variety of shops, cafes, and cultural spaces that create a lively atmosphere.
