    Discover more about Petrelë

Petrelë Castle, known locally as Kalaja e Petrelës, stands as a testament to Albania's rich and layered history. Located in the village of Petrelë, approximately 15 km south of Tirana, the castle's origins trace back to the 6th century AD when it was erected by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. This strategic location, approximately 329 meters (1,079 feet) above sea level, provided an advantageous vantage point. While the initial construction dates back to antiquity, the structure visible today largely originates from the 15th century. During Skanderbeg's resistance against the Ottomans, Petrelë Castle was commanded by Mamica Kastrioti, Skanderbeg's sister, highlighting its importance in the nation's defense. The castle was part of a signaling and defense system with Krujë Castle, using fires to communicate threats. Legend says that the castle was home to a beautiful girl named Elena, whose forbidden love ended in tragedy, and her spirit still wanders the castle. The castle has a triangular layout, reinforced by two prominent towers. These towers once offered unobstructed views of the Erzen River valley, surrounding hills, and the routes leading into central Albania. Today, Petrelë Castle welcomes visitors with a restaurant inside, offering a unique dining experience within its historic walls. The castle provides stunning views and a tangible link to Albania's past.
