Discover more about Big Bunker

Perched on a slope of the Ceraunian Mountains, the Big Bunker offers a strategic vantage point overlooking the Adriatic Sea. This imposing three-story structure, built in the 1970s, is a testament to Enver Hoxha's paranoia and Albania's extensive bunkerization program, which saw the construction of over 700,000 bunkers across the country. Hoxha, a staunch Stalinist, feared threats from every border and envisioned every citizen taking up arms and defending the country from within these bunkers. Today, the Big Bunker stands as a historical landmark, inviting visitors to explore its expansive corridors and imagine its intended purpose. While some areas are dilapidated with rubble and broken glass, the site offers a haunting yet educational experience. The bunker is filled with exhibits that showcase artifacts from the era, as well as informative displays that narrate the story of Albania's military history and the societal implications of its isolationist policies. Beyond the bunker itself, the surrounding landscape offers breathtaking views of the Albanian Riviera. The large concrete tunnel, once intended to house large equipment, now offers a unique perspective of the coast. The combination of historical intrigue and natural beauty makes the Big Bunker a compelling destination for those seeking to understand Albania's complex past and appreciate its stunning coastline.
