Discover more about Great Basilica

The Great Basilica, constructed in the first half of the 6th century AD, is a significant historical landmark within Butrint National Park. As the main church of Butrint during late antiquity, it showcases the architectural style prevalent in the region. The basilica features three naves separated by colonnades, with some columns repurposed from earlier buildings. The walls of the main nave are remarkably preserved, and the large five-sided apse retains its original windows.Though much of the mosaic floor is lost, remnants reveal patterns similar to those in the nearby Baptistery, suggesting a shared artistic influence. Despite its grandeur, the Great Basilica wasn't the cathedral; it was likely built with private funds, possibly as a tomb for a benefactor. Graves discovered under the floor indicate its later use as a burial site. Adjacent to the basilica are the remains of a nymphaeum, a fountain that was part of the city's ancient aqueduct system. In the 13th century, the basilica underwent significant reconstruction, becoming Butrint's cathedral. Today, the Great Basilica stands as one of the best-preserved late antique basilicas in the Mediterranean, offering visitors a tangible connection to Butrint's rich religious and cultural past.
