Discover more about Kalaja e Lëkurësit

Lëkurësi Castle (Kalaja e Lëkurësit) is a historic castle located on a strategic hill overlooking the town of Sarandë in southern Albania. Built in 1537 by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent of the Ottoman Empire, it was designed to protect the region from Venetian attacks and control the harbor of Sarandë and the road to Butrint. The castle's almost square shape features two round towers at opposite corners. The best-preserved sections are the southern and eastern sides. Historically, it housed a garrison of 220 soldiers. In the late 18th century, Ali Pasha of Ioannina attacked the castle, raiding the surrounding area.
