Perched on a commanding hilltop, Rozafa Fortress is the most iconic historical site in Shkodër, Albania. Its strategic location overlooks the meeting point of the Buna, Drin, and Kiri rivers, offering breathtaking views of the city, Lake Shkodra, and the Albanian Alps. Founded by the Illyrians in antiquity, around the 4th-3rd century BC, the fortress has been rebuilt and modified by Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans, each leaving their mark on its architecture. The diverse influences are evident in the castle's walls, towers, and interior structures. The fortress is best known for the legend of Rozafa, a tale of sacrifice and devotion. According to folklore, the castle repeatedly collapsed during construction until it was decided that a human sacrifice was needed to appease the gods. Rozafa, the wife of one of the three brothers building the castle, volunteered to be walled into the fortress, ensuring its stability. She requested that openings be left so she could continue to breastfeed her infant son. A sculpture near the entrance commemorates this legend. Inside the fortress, visitors can explore the ruins of various structures, including St. Stephen's Church, which was later transformed into a mosque by the Ottomans. The grounds also contain remnants of warehouses, water cisterns, and residential quarters. The Museum of Rozafa Castle houses artifacts and exhibits detailing the castle's history. Rozafa Castle offers a unique blend of history, legend, and natural beauty. Its panoramic views and intriguing ruins provide an unforgettable experience for visitors.
