Kalaja e Tiranës, or Tirana Castle, also known as the Fortress of Justinian, is a significant historical site located in the center of Tirana. The fortress's history stretches back to before 1300, with remnants from the Byzantine era. It is believed that the castle was one of the defensive structures constructed or reconstructed by Emperor Justinian in the 6th century. The fortress is situated where the main east-west and north-south roads crossed, forming the heart of Tirana. Today, visitors can explore the remaining Ottoman-era walls, which stand approximately 6 meters high. These walls have been integrated into the pedestrianized Murat Toptani Street, which is home to cafes and souvenir shops. Inside the fortress, a traditional bazaar opened in December 2018, offering traditional handicrafts and cuisine. The castle is owned by the Toptani family, who have restored it into a tourist attraction. The fortress has a rich history, serving as a road station of the Via Egnatia and the center of a settlement with various names throughout the centuries. The castle experienced damage during the inter-feudal wars of the 18th century but was heroically defended by the people of Tirana. Today, Kalaja e Tiranës is a cultural monument where visitors can experience a blend of the old and the new, with historical elements intertwined with modern amenities.
