Kalaja e Tiranës, or Tirana Castle, also known as the Fortress of Justinian, is a significant historical site located in the center of Tirana. The fortress's history stretches back to before 1300, with remnants from the Byzantine era. It is believed that the castle was one of the defensive structures constructed or reconstructed by Emperor Justinian in the 6th century. The fortress is situated where the main east-west and north-south roads crossed, forming the heart of Tirana. Today, visitors can explore the remaining Ottoman-era walls, which stand approximately 6 meters high. These walls have been integrated into the pedestrianized Murat Toptani Street, which is home to cafes and souvenir shops.
