Discover more about Pyramid of Tirana

The Pyramid of Tirana, originally the Enver Hoxha Museum, stands as a striking, albeit controversial, landmark in Albania's capital. Built in 1988 to honor the former communist leader, the pyramid-shaped structure has undergone numerous transformations, mirroring Albania's own journey through shifting political landscapes. Designed by a team including Hoxha's daughter, the building's brutalist architecture initially served as a museum showcasing his legacy. Following the fall of communism in 1991, it was repurposed as a conference center, exhibition venue, and even a temporary base for NATO during the Kosovo War. For a time, it also functioned as a nightclub and radio station, leading to a period of neglect and disrepair. In recent years, the Pyramid has been revitalized as a youth-focused IT center named TUMO Tirana. This transformation, completed in May 2023, has seen the building reimagined by MVRDV, a Dutch architectural firm. The renovated structure now features staircases along its sloped sides, allowing visitors to climb to the top for panoramic city views. Inside, colorful boxes house cafes, studios, workshops, and classrooms where young Albanians can learn about computer programming, robotics, and other creative technologies. Today, the Pyramid stands as a symbol of Tirana's resilience and forward-thinking spirit, blending historical significance with modern functionality. It's a place where the past is acknowledged, and the future is embraced, offering a unique experience for tourists and locals alike.
