Discover more about Skanderbeg Statue

Dominating Skanderbeg Square, the Skanderbeg Statue is more than just a monument; it's a powerful symbol of Albanian identity and resilience. Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu, the 15th-century nobleman immortalized in bronze, is revered for his unwavering resistance against the Ottoman Empire, making him a national hero. Created by sculptor Odhise Paskali, along with Andrea Mana and Janaq Paço, the 11-meter (36 ft) statue was inaugurated in January 1968, marking the 500th anniversary of Skanderbeg's death. The statue replaced a statue of Joseph Stalin. Skanderbeg is depicted on horseback in full battle regalia, capturing his courage and determination. The monument serves as a focal point for national pride and a reminder of Albania's historical struggles. Skanderbeg Square, where the statue stands, is the heart of Tirana, surrounded by significant cultural and historical landmarks. These include the National History Museum, the Et'hem Bey Mosque, the Clock Tower, and the Palace of Culture. The square itself has undergone significant transformations, most recently in 2017, into a vast pedestrian area with fountains and aromatic trees, making it a vibrant meeting place for locals and tourists alike. The square also has an underground parking that can accommodate up to 300 vehicles.
