Walking

From the center of Berat, walk uphill towards Berat Castle along Rruga Mihal Komnena. The walk is steep and takes approximately 15-20 minutes. Once inside the castle grounds, follow signs or ask locals for directions to the Water Cistern. No costs are associated with this approach.

Taxi

Taxis are available in Berat and can take you directly to the entrance of Berat Castle. From there, it is a short walk to the Water Cistern. A taxi ride from the city center to the castle costs approximately 1800 ALL. Be sure to confirm the price with the driver before starting your journey.

Public Transport

From the Berat Bus Terminal, take a local city bus towards the easternmost point of the city. Get off near the main road and walk towards the castle. From there, follow the walking directions to the Water Cistern. A bus ticket costs approximately 30 ALL.

The Water Cistern, known locally as Saranxha, is a fascinating ruin dating back to the 12th century, located within the UNESCO World Heritage site of Berat Castle. Positioned on the highest point of the Acropolis, its architectural style and size make it one of the most interesting objects in the center of Berat's castle. This ancient reservoir stands as a testament to the incredible engineering skills of the time, crucial for supplying water to the castle residents during sieges.Inside, the cistern reveals a large, dark room where water once settled, offering a cool contrast to the outside. The structure blends seamlessly into the fortress walls, resembling another barrack or stable. Small windows filter light into the cistern, creating an atmospheric play of light and shadow on the stone walls.Surrounded by the picturesque landscape of Berat, the Water Cistern provides a peaceful escape amidst the city's vibrant atmosphere. While exploring the cistern, visitors can also enjoy stunning views of the Berat Castle, the Osum River, and the surrounding area.
