Discover more about Kuzum Baba

Kuzum Baba, perched on a hill overlooking Vlorë, is a significant religious and cultural site in Albania. This natural terrace, approximately 30 meters above sea level, derives its name from Sejjid Ali Sulltan, also known as Father Kuzum, a revered Bektashi spiritual leader believed to be buried here. The site is home to a Bektashi temple (Tempulli i Bektashinjve), initially constructed around 1600, which stands as one of the most important Bektashi centers in Albania. The Bektashi order, a Sufi sect emphasizing love, tolerance, and community, has deep historical roots in Albania. Though the sect's influence waned in the 19th century due to persecutions, it has since been revived, making the Kuzum Baba temple a vital center for Bektashis. Kuzum Baba isn't only a religious site but also a destination for those seeking stunning views. From the hilltop, visitors can enjoy sweeping vistas of Vlorë, the Adriatic Sea, and the surrounding mountains. The site is particularly popular during sunrise and sunset when the landscape is bathed in golden light. Throughout history, Kuzum Baba has served various roles. In 1914, the tekke provided refuge for migrants, and during World War II, it was used as a small military outpost by the Italians. The buildings were restored after 1945, but the site was closed in 1967 when religion was banned, before being reopened in 1992. Today, Kuzum Baba continues to be a place of spiritual significance and natural beauty, attracting pilgrims and tourists alike.
