Flag's Square: The Heart of Vlorë

Flag's Square, or Sheshi i Flamurit, serves as the main plaza in Vlorë, Albania, holding deep historical and cultural importance. It commemorates the Albanian Declaration of Independence, proclaimed on November 28, 1912, making Vlorë the first capital of independent Albania.The square's focal point is the Independence Monument, a bronze sculpture erected in 1972 to mark the 60th anniversary of this pivotal event. The monument depicts Ismail Qemali, Albania's first Prime Minister, along with other key figures like revolutionary commander Isa Boletini. The Albanian flag waves above an obelisk, a constant reminder of the nation's sovereignty. Ismail Qemali is buried in a monumental tomb within the square, crafted by sculptor Odise Paskali.Opposite the monument stands the Muradie Mosque, built in 1542 by the renowned Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan. This historical building showcases classic Ottoman architectural elements, including a rectangular structure and a prominent dome. The mosque and adjacent park have been renovated, adding to the square's appeal.Behind the Independence Monument lie the remnants of the ancient city of Aulon, dating back to the 5th or 6th century BC.
