Discover more about Sacred Heart Cathedral

The Sacred Heart Cathedral of Algiers, located in the Sidi M'Hamed district, is more than just a religious building; it's a testament to faith, architectural innovation, and Algeria's colonial history. Completed in 1956, it replaced the Cathedral of Saint Philip, which was then converted back into the Ketchaoua Mosque. The cathedral was consecrated in 1963 and became the cathedral church of the Archdiocese of Algiers. Commissioned by Bishop Leynaud in 1944, construction began after World War II, fulfilling a vow to thank God for protecting Algeria. Designed by architects Paul Herbé and Jean Le Couteur, with engineer René Sarger, the cathedral embodies modernist principles inspired by the Gospel of John. The structure is 52 meters long and 35 meters wide, dominated by a central tower. Inside, a serene atmosphere prevails. A small organ, a gift from the parish of Boufarik, greets visitors at the entrance, opposite a mosaic from the Roman basilica of Castellum Tingitanum (present-day Chlef), dating back to 324 CE. The altar, carved from Carrara marble, houses relics of African saints. Stained-glass windows cast vibrant light, enhancing the spiritual ambiance. The surrounding gardens offer a tranquil escape from the city. The cathedral's design reflects a blend of neo-Gothic and Byzantine styles. The architects sought beauty through structural form, creating a contemplative space with carefully designed light. The central tower features an intricate concrete structure, allowing purple light to filter into the church. The floor plan resembles an Icthus, symbolizing Jesus Christ.
