Bab El Fouka: A Hammadid Gateway

Bab El Fouka, historically named Bab El Bounoud (Gate of the Standards), is a significant landmark in Béjaïa, Algeria, with a rich history dating back to 1070. Constructed by the Hammadid Sultan al-Nasir, this gate was one of five that pierced the wall surrounding the city. It served as a monumental entrance and a key point of control for interaction with inland regions. In its prime, Bab El Fouka was adorned with large blades, framed by two bastions and flanked by two turrets. A royal pretorium once sat atop the gate, where the Hammadid Sultan would sit during fairs, caravan arrivals, and festivals. From this vantage point, the Sultan faced those entering the city, highlighting the gate's importance in civic life. A mirror apparatus called al-Menara (the beacon) once served as a signal tower. Today, only a wall constructed of large stones remains, featuring two gates, the left one being the oldest when approaching from outside the city. Despite its state of disrepair, Bab El Fouka continues to offer stunning views of Béjaïa and the Mediterranean Sea, attracting tourists and history enthusiasts.
