Yemma Gouraya, or Mother Gouraya, is more than just a mountain peak; it's a cultural and historical landmark that watches over the city of Béjaïa. Rising to a height of 660 meters, it offers stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding coastline. The mountain is named after Yemma Gouraya, the patron saint of Béjaïa, a revered local figure who, according to legend, chose the mountain as a place for solitude and meditation, offering her wisdom to those who sought it. At the summit stands a fort, originally built by the Spanish in the 16th century and later renovated by French forces in the 19th century. This fort occupies the site of what was believed to be the tomb of Yemma Gouraya, adding a layer of spiritual significance to the location. The name 'Yemma' means mother in the Kabyle language, and 'Gouraya' may come from Berber terms signifying 'followers of the moon'. The mountain is located within Gouraya National Park, a UNESCO-recognized biosphere reserve known for its diverse flora and fauna, including the Barbary macaque. Hiking trails wind through the park, offering visitors a chance to explore the natural beauty of the area.
