Discover more about Ruines Tiddis près Constantine

The ruins of Tiddis, also known as Castellum Tidditanorum, offer a fascinating journey into Algeria's Roman past. Located near the town of Béni Hamidane in the Constantine Province, Tiddis was once a Roman military outpost, strategically built on a hillside to defend Constantine. The city's elevated position provides stunning views of the surrounding landscapes and striking red earth. Founded in the 3rd century, Tiddis showcases a blend of Numidian and Roman influences. Unlike typical Roman cities with a grid layout, Tiddis adapted to the terrain, resulting in a unique urban plan. The city lacked natural water sources, leading to the construction of impressive cisterns and channels to collect and store rainwater. These cisterns, with a capacity of around 350,000 liters, demonstrate the ingenuity of its inhabitants. Visitors can explore various well-preserved structures, including the Arch of Memmius, sanctuaries dedicated to Roman gods like Ceres, Vesta, and Mithras, and a Christian church with baptisteries. The Villa of Mosaics features intricate mosaics, an olive press, and baths that were later repurposed as a pottery. The site also includes a necropolis with circular tombs known as Bazinas, some dating back to pre-Roman times. A mausoleum of Quintus Lollius Urbicus, a governor of Britannia, is located about 4 km away.
