Tiddis, also known as Castellum Tidditanorum, is a former Roman city located near Béni Hamidane, approximately 30km from Constantine. The city, now in ruins, clings to the side of an ochre mountain, offering breathtaking views and a unique historical experience. Tiddis was initially built as a defensive castellum for the Confederatio Cirtense and was later Romanized. The city showcases a blend of Roman and Berber influences, with structures adapted to the natural curves of the site. Explore the remains of houses, sanctuaries dedicated to Roman gods like Ceres, Vesta, and Mithra, and Christian baptisteries. The Villa of Mosaics features remnants of mosaics, an olive press, and bathhouses. The absence of natural water sources led to the construction of channels and cisterns to collect and store rainwater, a testament to the ingenuity of its inhabitants. From the car park, visitors are greeted by rock, striking red earth, and the remains of circular tombs, some dating back to pre-Roman times. The main entrance features a classic Roman arch, offering a glimpse into the city's past. The site is divided into three groups: the plateau, the eastern side, and the foot of the cliff, each offering unique insights into the city's layout and history. Don't miss the nearby Mausoleum of Quintus Lollius Urbicus, a memorial dedicated to the governor of Britannia.
