Explore the remote beauty of Amguid Crater, a unique geological wonder in the heart of the Algerian Sahara.
Amguid Crater, a remarkably preserved impact crater in the Algerian Sahara, offers a glimpse into the region's geological past. Formed less than 100,000 years ago, its stark beauty and remote location make it a unique destination for adventurous travelers.
Opening times, essentials, and a few local tips gathered into one calmer, easier-to-scan planning section.
4x4 Vehicle
The most practical approach to Amguid Crater involves a robust 4x4 vehicle capable of handling rough desert terrain. Starting from In Salah, head southeast on the Trans-Sahara Highway. Approximately halfway between In Salah and Arak, turn off the highway and head north. This leg of the journey requires careful navigation and a reliable GPS, as marked roads are scarce. The final 8 miles are particularly challenging, potentially requiring a walk over the plateau or through the Oued Tafrekrek canyon to reach the crater. Due to the remoteness and lack of services, ensure your vehicle is in top condition, and carry spare fuel, tires, and recovery equipment. It's highly advisable to travel with a convoy of vehicles and experienced local guides. There are no official entry fees, but hiring a local guide will cost approximately 5,000-10,000 DZD per day.
Camel Trek
For a truly immersive experience, consider reaching Amguid Crater via a multi-day camel trek. Starting from a village such as Arak, the journey to the crater takes approximately 10 days, covering around 120 miles. This approach requires the services of a guide, cook, and a camel caravan to carry provisions. Waterholes (gueltas) along the route provide essential replenishment. This is a physically demanding option, requiring good health and careful planning. Costs vary depending on the outfitter, but expect to pay around 15,000-25,000 DZD per person for a fully supported trek.
