Abdullah Bin Salem Mosque: A Testament to Oran's Diverse History

The Abdullah Bin Salem Mosque, located on Boulevard Abderahmane Mira in Oran, Algeria, is more than just a place of worship; it's a powerful symbol of the city's layered past. Originally, this magnificent structure was built as the Great Synagogue of Oran. Construction began in 1879, driven by the vision of Simon Kanoui, with the goal of creating the largest and most beautiful synagogue in North Africa. After 38 years of construction, it finally opened its doors in 1918, becoming a central landmark for the Jewish community of Oran. The synagogue was designed in the Neo-Mudéjar and Moorish Revival styles, reflecting the architectural trends of the time and incorporating elements of both Moorish and European design. Its grandeur was evident in its towering facade, adorned with two 20-meter-high towers topped with domes. Inside, the prayer hall was illuminated by stained glass windows and supported by red marble columns. Following Algeria's independence in 1962, the Jewish population largely emigrated, and in 1975, the building was converted into a mosque. It was renamed the Abdullah Bin Salem Mosque, honoring a 7th-century Jewish figure from Medina who converted to Islam and was a companion of the Prophet Muhammad. Today, the mosque continues to serve as a place of worship for the Muslim community of Oran, while also standing as a reminder of the city's diverse religious and cultural heritage.
