Cal Pal: A Window into Andorran Heritage

Cal Pal, located in the charming village of La Cortinada, is more than just a museum; it's a journey through Andorran history and culture. This stately home, documented since the 14th century, began as the Escoter inn and was later donated to Joan Pal d'Ordino in 1435. The Pal family managed the house for centuries, and it eventually became one of the most representative examples of Andorran vernacular architecture.Over the years, Cal Pal has undergone several expansions and renovations, most notably in the 16th and 19th centuries. These additions include a third annex, a dovecot, and covered galleries, all contributing to its unique character. The north-east façade features striking carvings of human faces on the ends of the roof-beams. After falling into disrepair and being closed for many years, Cal Pal was carefully restored and reopened as a sociocultural space in October 2018.Today, Cal Pal hosts temporary exhibitions and serves as a space for reflection on Andorran identity, origins, and natural and cultural heritage. Guided tours are available in multiple languages, offering insights into the house's history and the traditions of Andorra. While the house is not fully adapted for those with limited mobility, it provides a unique and engaging experience for those interested in delving into Andorra's past.
