Casamanya Peak: Andorra's Central Summit
Hike to the heart of Andorra for panoramic views from the easily accessible summit of Casamanya, a local favorite.
Casamanya, rising to 2,740 meters (8,990 feet), is a charismatic peak located in the geographical center of Andorra, straddling the parishes of Ordino and Canillo. This easily accessible mountain is a favorite among locals and tourists alike, offering incredible 360° views of the surrounding Pyrenees. The peak is composed of limestone rock, giving it a distinctive whitish hue that contrasts with the darker tones of neighboring mountains. The hike to the summit is a rewarding experience, with a well-marked trail that winds through diverse landscapes. Starting from the Ordino Pass (Coll d'Ordino), the path initially leads through the Airola forest, characterized by black pine trees and various herbaceous plants, including the potentially poisonous yellow monkshood. As you ascend, the forest gives way to open, grassy slopes, offering ever-expanding vistas. The trail follows a wide mountain ridge, becoming steeper near the summit. The final section involves a short, challenging climb to the top, marked by a stone pile and a small iron monument. From the summit, hikers can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Andorra's valleys and peaks. Keep an eye out for griffon vultures and bearded vultures soaring on the thermal winds.
